I took this picture on a beautiful afternoon in the fall of 2020. This area, now in Jay Cooke State Park, Minnesota, was crucial to the survival of the local Native Americans, now called the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. For Native Americans and early European explorers and fur traders, the St. Louis River was a vital connection between the Mississippi and the Great Lakes.
