Late in 2015, I drove northward through Minnesota, near the edge of the Boundary Waters Conservation Area. Route 1 from Finland to Isabella was an endless row of snow-laden trees. Since I love to photograph snow, I was delighted, but disappointed that the sun refused to shine. It was about 3 p.m., late in the day to be out alone in this area, even with a reliable vehicle. For one thing, at this latitude, you can forget about a phone signal.
Then I realized that the sun was indeed glowing in the south, through heavy clouds. I thought, "That's the light of the North, and the only light you're going to get today." It provided a subtle but dramatic backlight for the ghostly tree forms. I took this picture and hightailed it back to civilization.
